There are many options available when choosing not only a new door but also the size of the door space that you have. If you’re building a new home or planning a renovation, you’ll have more options available to you, but there are some things you should consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people might not think too much about the door size, but what is considered a standard door size might not be the right fit for your space, and you may want to consider something customised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between interior and exterior doors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not all door sizes are the same, and there are differences between internal and external doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior doors are usually smaller than exterior doors, and there is a number of reasons for this. Interior doors don’t need to accommodate large furniture items that need to be brought inside the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior doors are also less sturdy compared to exterior doors as they are not exposed to the elements and don’t need to provide your home with added security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exterior doors need to be able to withstand strong winds, heat and rain, as well as ensure they provide security to your home. They are usually thicker than interior doors and are made of stronger materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sizes do vary, no matter the type of door you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior Door Sizes in Australia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The standard internal door size in Australia is 820mm x 2040mm. If you need a door for a narrow space, you will be able to source a door that is as narrow as 600mm. Most interior doors have a 35mm thickness.<\/p>\n\n\n

Exterior Door Sizes in Australia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The standard external door size in Australia is 870mm x 2040mm, which is slightly bigger than interior doors. There are options to have doors that are up to 1200mm, but some people may choose to have external doors custom-made, and then your options are unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the larger the door, you need to consider the heaviness of the door and how it will survive over time. The weight of the door alone may cause it to warp over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exterior doors are thicker than interior doors, and the standard thickness is 40mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The differences in door sizes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important to remember there may be requirements as to why you need a specific door size. The door sizes you find in a residential property will be different to those you may find<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in a commercial property. A commercial property will need to be able to accommodate things like wheelchairs and trolleys, whereas residential doors only need to be wide enough for people to be able to comfortably walk through. Some residential door frames may be customised to also accommodate wheelchairs; door handles can be installed at a lower height as well for ease of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing the right door size for your property<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s obvious there is a wide range of door sizes available, and your best starting place is to speak to your builder about your requirements. If you’re doing a new build, they will suggest to you the right door sizes for your ceiling height and your personal needs. The biggest decision you will probably have in regards to your door sizes is your front door. The width of the door will be something to consider with many new homes, builds and renovations opting to have a wider than usual door frame to set the tone of the entrance of your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
