{"id":2466,"date":"2017-03-29T01:35:48","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T14:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/?p=2466"},"modified":"2018-09-06T14:07:26","modified_gmt":"2018-09-06T04:07:26","slug":"residual-current-devices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/residual-current-devices\/","title":{"rendered":"Residual Current Devices (RCD\u2019s) in WA \u2013 Why, What, When, and Where"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Why <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">In Western Australia, the Energy Regulations 1947 were amended in 2009 to require that when a residential property is transferred, leased or hired, the owner must ensure that a minimum of two Residual Current Devices (RCD\u2019s) protecting all power points and lighting circuits, are installed. There are significant fines for those that fail to comply. All new homes from 2000 required RCD\u2019s to be installed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">What <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">RCD\u2019s monitor the flow of electricity from the main switchboard and prevent electrocution by cutting the electricity supply if an imbalance in the current is detected. \u00a0Current RCD\u2019s will normally be able to cut the power within 10 to 30 milliseconds. By installing at least two RCD\u2019s, the property&#8217;s circuits can be divided evenly. \u00a0This ensures some light and power remain if one RCD operates and also minimises faulty operation from appliances which have low-level leakage current. \u00a0All properties constructed from the year 2000 should already have two RCD\u2019s fitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">When &#8211; Homes for sale<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">At least two RCD\u2019s\u00a0must be fitted to protect all power points and lighting circuits\u00a0before the land title is transferred. \u00a0If you are planning to sell your home and it does not already have at least\u00a0two RCD\u2019s protecting all power points and lighting circuits, you will need to engage a licensed\u00a0electrical contractor to fit two RCD\u2019s to the main switchboard or distribution board.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">When &#8211; Renting a home<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Landlords must arrange for at least two Residual Current Devices to be installed on the switchboard at their rental premises. \u00a0If RCD\u2019s are not fitted then tenants should contact the managing agent or landlord and request that two RCD\u2019s be installed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Where- Number of RCD\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u200bThe regulations require two RCD\u2019s be installed on the main switchboard. \u00a0In some cases, to reduce the number of circuits affected by the operation of any one RCD, homeowners may consider having more than two RCD\u2019s fitted. There are limits on the number of circuits that can be directed to an RCD hence there may be a requirement in some properties to have more than two RCD\u2019s. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Testing the Residual Current Devices<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u200bAll RCD\u2019s have a test button which should be pressed every three months. \u00a0Pushing the test button simulates an earth leakage fault and indicates whether or not the RCD is operating correctly. \u00a0Electric clocks and timers will require resetting after each test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Testing beyond the test button on the RCD unit requires a Licenced Electrician. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Compliance<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Penalties of up to $15,000 for individuals and up to $100,000 for a body corporate may apply if the regulations are breached.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Who can Install RCD\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Only licensed electricians are qualified and permitted to install and test (beyond the test button) RCD\u2019s. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">How much does it cost to install an RCD safety switch in Perth?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Prices start from as little as $200 &#8211; $300 each (supplied and fitted).\u00a0 Costs do depend on the type of electrical box installed at the premises as the RCD must fit correctly and be compliant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/03\/rcd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/03\/rcd-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/03\/rcd-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/03\/rcd.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why In Western Australia, the Energy Regulations 1947 were amended in 2009 to require that when a residential property is transferred, leased or hired, the owner must ensure that a minimum of two Residual Current Devices (RCD\u2019s) protecting all power points and lighting circuits, are installed.
