Our handy guide will help explain further.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is A Balustrade?<\/h2>\n<p>Balustrades have been around for a long time and are fairly common architectural features.<\/p>\n<p>They are usually found when walking up and down the stairs and are essentially railings or walls designed to prevent people from falling over the edge of stairs, a balcony or ledge.<\/p>\n<p>They come in a myriad of shapes and sizes and often contain decorative features as can be seen below :<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a This is especially important for elderly people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>They add an extra layer of strength to staircases:\u00a0<\/strong>Its common to have creaky stairs in houses, balustrades may help re-enforce your staircase and may even prevent that annoying creaking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>When Are Balustrades Required?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2608 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/9-300x151.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/9-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/9-768x387.png 768w, https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/9.png 844w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>For some guidance on balustrade height building regulations, a continuous barrier (such as a balustrade) <strong>must<\/strong> be provided along the side of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>any roof to which general access is provided;<\/li>\n<li>any stairway or ramp;<\/li>\n<li>a floor, corridor, hallway, balcony, deck, verandah, mezzanine, access bridge or the like; and<\/li>\n<li>any delineated path of access to a building.<\/li>\n<li>where the trafficable surface is <u>1 m or more above the surface beneath<\/u>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Building Code of Australia (BCA) Volume 2 &#8211; Housing Provisions contains requirements for balustrades and other barrier constructions for Class 1 residential buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Part 3.9.2 of the BCA sets out the acceptable construction practice for balustrades as part of the requirements for barriers and handrails.<\/p>\n<p>These provisions have been changed over the last few years so it is important that members review these changes to ensure that stairs, in particular, have compliant balustrades.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Balustrade Height Building Regulations: Construction Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The construction of a balustrade or other barrier must be in accordance with the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The height must not be less than 865 mm above the nosings of the stair treads or the floor of a ramp;<\/li>\n<li>The height must not be less than\u2014<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A. 1m above the floor of any access path, balcony, landing or the like (see Figure 2); o r<\/p>\n<p>B. 865 mm above the floor of a landing to a stair or ramp where the barrier is provided along the inside edge of the landing and does not exceed a length of 500 mm;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/10-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/10-1-300x132.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/10-1-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/10-1-768x338.png 768w, https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/10-1.png 769w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>C. A transition zone may be incorporated where the barrier height changes from 865 mm on the stair flight or ramp to 1 m at the landing (see Figure 3);<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/11-300x154.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/11-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/www.houspect.com.au\/wa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/11.png 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>D. Openings in barriers (including decorative balustrades) must be constructed so that they do not permit a 125 mm sphere to pass through it. For stairs the opening is measured above the nosing line of the stair treads (Figure 2);<\/p>\n<p>E. A barrier, except a window serving as a barrier, must be designed to take loading forces in accordance with AS\/NZS 1170.1; and<\/p>\n<p>F. For floors more than 4 m above the surface beneath, any horizontal elements within the barrier between 150 mm and 760 mm above the floor must not facilitate climbing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What are the Issues that We See Today?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The construction requirements for balustrades were tightened in July 1997. In houses approved after this date, horizontal stair balustrades and balcony balustrades must be a minimum of 1m above floor level. Balustrades are only required for a difference in levels in excess of 1m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Balustrades Summary<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Balustrades are important! They should be able to stop people (especially kids) from falling and causing injury and or death to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>There are some very specific requirements for balustrades constructed in homes approved for construction post-July 1997.
