Winter weather conditions can have a substantial negative effect on the way a property presents and can make it difficult to sell.
Houspect Building inspectors frequently come across properties, (especially older ones) where, with the onset of winter, curtains have been drawn and heaters cranked up.
Unfortunately this results in stale, stagnant, moist air that encourages mould to grow. Many buyers believe any smell of dampness is indicative of a leaky roof. Significantly, the most requested inspection item on pre-purchase inspections is to ‘check the roof for leaks’ – even when there is no visible sign of a problem.
Vendors should be advised in winter to open curtains and windows before a home open just to let some light in, and allow fresh air to circulate.
