Tips on Spring Cleaning
Do you dread the thought of spring cleaning your home? If so, we have some spring cleaning tips and hacks that will make life easier. These tricks do not require significant spending and you may already have most of the products needed in your cabinets or fridge.
Microwave Disinfection
Sponges are not the most hygienic cleaning items once they have been used. They harbour a lot of germs and bacteria which can become a health risk. However, there is a solution that will disinfect your sponges, leaving them smelling fresh and clean.
Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on your sponges and put them in the microwave for two minutes. This will kill germs and give them a lemony aroma.
Cinnamon Scents
Most people enjoy the smell of cinnamon. You can use cinnamon in the same way that you would use carpet freshener. Spreading cinnamon around your carpets and then vacuuming it up will leave a fragrant aroma all-around your home.
Bathtub Grapefruit Scrub
A mixture of grapefruit and salt is a great, chemical-free solution for cleaning a bath. Sprinkle the salt on a half grapefruit and then use it to scrub the bath clean. The smell is pleasing to the nose and you won’t have to worry about harsh chemicals eroding sealants or the bathtub enamelling.
Clean with Vinegar
You may have already heard that vinegar is an effective cleaning product. Well, it’s true. It can remove limescale, clean windows and even works for fridges. An equal mixture of water and white vinegar makes the ideal cleaning solution.
When Life gives you Lemons
Another excellent spring cleaning tip, if you keep lemons at home and don’t use them for cleaning, you are missing a trick. The acid in lemons is effective at removing most types of dirt. You can also use lemon just to remove rust.
If you have a chopping board that is stained, scrub it with lemon juice, leave it for ten minutes and then rinse. In most cases, the acid in the lemon juice will remove the stain and leave the chopping board smelling fresh.
Bicarbonate of Soda
Just like vinegar, bicarbonate of soda is a great all-round cleaning product. You can clean stubborn stains, remove rust, expel odours in filthy bins, and all with the product that most people know as baking soda. Has your mattress seen better days? If you sprinkle some baking powder on a mattress and leave it for an hour it will freshen up the look of the mattress and eliminate any odours. Just remember to vacuum up the baking soda when the hour is up!
Salt of the Earth
If you aren’t using a salt solution as a scrub, you are missing out on an effective way to clean and disinfect your sinks and garbage disposal. It also won’t do any harm to add a teaspoon of salt to your other homemade cleaning solutions.
Clean from the Top Down
If you are cleaning your home from the bottom up, you’re doing it wrong. When you begin spring cleaning, dust and dirt will settle once you have completed each area. It makes more sense to clean from the top down, so you are effectively pushing dirt and dust towards the outside of your home.
Create Order
When you spring clean, always do so with a plan and purpose in mind. Organise your personal belongings, foodstuff, cleaning products etc in a logical way. Get your family on board and explain the system for using household items and returning them to their rightful place. If your family follows the system, that means less spring cleaning in your future!
