Many older houses were built using concrete roof tiles because they are incredibly strong and can withstand many elements. It’s not uncommon for a concrete roof to last for as long as 50 years, although, saying that, the colour of the roof tile can fade long before that. This is due to the roof being exposed to the sun, which can cause severe weather damage. Roof tiles have come a long way and you’ll find that it’s less likely that a newer home will need to have its roof repainted. Roof coatings now are far more durable.
Roof restoration has become a popular choice when renovating a home, if your roof is in good condition, it is a much cheaper option than replacing your entire roof. A fresh coat of paint can make your roof look brand new again and restore it to its former glory.
Many people may choose to call in a professional to do this type of work, but if you are the DIY type, we have listed a guide below for you to follow.
Guide to painting concrete roof tiles
Personal Safety
Before getting on your roof, ensure that you’ve taken the necessary safety precautions. It is recommended that you use a safety harness and have all the equipment you need readily available. Rubber sole shoes are also recommended.
Surface Preparation
It’s important to ensure that your surface is clean, if you don’t follow this step correctly, the paint will not bond well to the surface.
Wash your concrete roof tiles with a high-pressure cleaner (If you don’t own one, they are available to hire). This will remove any flaking paint, dirt, stains and mould. You need to allow your roof to completely dry before moving to the next step.
Primer
Whilst some people may choose to use a roller, you can save time by using a sprayer. Start by working your way from the top of the roof, down. You only need one coat, but it is important that you allow this to dry (not just touch dry) as per the manufacturer recommendation before applying the paint. Your local paint shop will be able to recommend the best primer for your roof.
Paint Application
Apply the paint using a roller or sprayer. Following the same steps as when you applied the primer, you should always start from the top and work your way down. It is recommended that you do two coats for the best finish. Depending on what colour tile you are painting over, you may need a third coat so it is not patchy. Always ensure that the paint has cured for at least 2 hours (if not longer) before applying the second coat.
Touch Ups
After you’ve allowed your roof to dry completely for a few days, take a look to see if there are any areas that you’ve missed that require a touch up. A smaller brush can be used for corners / edges so that your colour is uniform all over.
Using a Professional
Painting concrete roof tiles is a big task, one that many don’t realise until they’ve commenced the DIY project. Consider obtaining a quote from a professional and weigh up the cost of materials and your time involved. If you choose to go down the professional path, it is recommended that you engage a company that has both roofing and painting certification. A reputable company should also offer you a workmanship and product guarantee.
Can painting concrete roof tiles make a home cooler?
There are some products available that provide the additional benefit of reflecting the UV rays from the sun. In this case, you may find that the inside temperature of your home will drop several degrees.
Once the job is completed, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner! Freshly painted concrete roof tiles instantly add more appeal to the home and can create a great first impression. Take the time to research what materials are best suited for your roof as this will contribute to the longevity of the project.
